WELCH
HENRY MUNTER was born and raised in Sun Valley, Idaho, where he began backcountry skiing in his dad’s backpack. He competed in freestyle mogul skiing, and continued to backcountry ski with his family. After four years of rain, ice, and college in Maine, Henry moved to Bozeman, Montana, where he became a member of the Yellowstone Club Ski Patrol.
As a patroller, Henry pursued extensive formal medical and avalanche training. He also worked in avalanche control and participated in numerous snow-science research projects. At the 2008 International Snow Science Workshop in Whistler, Henry presented a paper he coauthored on radiation recrystallization of the snow surface, the result of two seasons of fieldwork, thousands of photographs of snow crystals, and collaboration with researchers from Montana State University.
When not skiing, Henry works as a wilderness river guide and whitewater kayak instructor in Idaho, Montana, and Alaska. Henry also travels the world with his kayak, and has undertaken whitewater expeditions in such far-flung places as Bhutan, Peru, and Madagascar.
