Our Trips - Helicopter: : Snowcat: : Kings & Corn: : Lodging
helicopter operations I THE TORDRILLO PROJECT 2006

This is a trip that has been long overdue. For seven years we have been exploring the Tordrillos of the Alaska Range in the early summer months for our Kings and Corn packages. We are now prepared to work in this area in the winter. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the area, it is a massive chunk of terrain located 60 miles west of Anchorage. This fly-in lodge is sandwiched between three 11,000 foot volcanoes and Denali (the great one) at almost 21,000 feet. Although we are not offering ski descents of Denali ( its in the park) we do have our eyes on the terrain surrounding the volcanoes. Mount Gerdine and Torbert possess some of the most outstanding heli ski terrain we have ever experienced. Massive glaciers and couloir incised peaks are truly an endless pursuit. This remote range receives generous amounts of snowfall and an equal amount of stable weather conditions.  Be part of this fascinating opportunity! We are offering 12 guests a week a chance to experience the Alaska Range in the winter conditions.

We are very familiar with the range and are certain that we can find the conditions you are looking for. Even more familiar, is the lodge that we lease for the trip. This remote lodge has all of the comforts of a first class heli lodge, some 90 miles into the bush. Comfortable cabins and wonderful Alaskan cuisine await you on your return from skiing. A full bar and table games entertain guests for the evenings.Your arrival and departure will be by an Otter ski plane, and takes about an hour to accomplish the leg between Anchorage and the lodge.

Don’t miss the opportunity as space is limited and only two weeks are being offered for our first season at it. This is truly a unique Alaskan experience you should see for yourself.

:: weather and conditions
The Tordrillos are much different than our coastal operations.  The intermountain climate has cooler temperatures and stable weather patterns.  Storms from Cook Inlet push from the coast and collide with
the mountain front, hitting hard and depositing large accumulations in short periods of time.  Clearing trends are fairly dependable with temperatures averaging 15-25°F.  Great powder snow accumulates on all aspects and elevations, offering runs that top out at 7,500 feet and end at 2,000 feet.

:: terrain
The Tordrillo Range is like no other place in the world. The mountains are geologically diverse. Some of the peaks are volcanic with large deposits of cinder and teffra. The entire Tordrillo complex sits on top
of a large granite batholith, surrounded by sedimentary deposits that result in fantastic skiing and boarding.  The erosiveness combined with the glacial activity has carved outstanding ski runs throughout the range.  Granite bulges with incised couloirs and towers keep things interesting.  Most runs range between 3,000 and 4,000 vertical feet with great landings and pickup zones.  Denali National Park, just 30 miles away, offers panoramic views of the largest peak in North America.
